Music from Karlsruhe … a Modern Premier Recording
Sebastian Bodinus (1700-1759): Musicalisches Divertissement, IV: Six Trio Sonatas for Two Hautbois and Basso Continuo. Performed by Toutes Suites, dir. Marianne R. Pfau.  Leipzig: Genuin, 2009.

Before you listen to anything else, put on Toutes Suites! And not just the first, splendid Genuin CD by the German-Californian ensemble performing the music of Jean M. Müller, but also their latest release, a true world premiere of trio sonatas by Karlsruhe court musician Sebastian Bodinus (1700 -1759), which so far have suffered undeserved neglect. In a disc commemorating the 250th anniversary of Bodinus’ death in 2009, the brilliance and inspired performances of oboist Marianne Pfau and her excellent colleagues not only blow the dust off historic gems, but also give your speakers a lively and elegant ‘spring clean’. With all due credit to Handel, we demand a Bodinus Year-tout de suite!

Available in Europe at Genuin, in the U.S. at University of San Diego bookstore.

Music from Hanau … a Modern Premier
Recording
Jean Michel Muller: XII Sonates for Hautbois de Concert, 3 other oboes and Basso Continuo. Performed by Toutes Suites, dir. Marianne R. Pfau.  Leipzig: Genuin, 2008.

Open the corset and breathe freely! Away with bloodless chirping and that skinny, hollow sound! The “hoboist band” of the Californian “Toutes Suites” offers full, voluptuous life, as shown in the pictures of Rubens or Caravaggio…. It is incredible with what display of splendour, with what variety of colour such a “hoboist band” of just seven musicians can fly along.

Available in Europe at Genuin, in the U.S. at the University of San Diego bookstore

From Hamburg: The first Music Subscription Service

Georg Philipp Telemann: Der getreue Music-Meister: A Musical Journal. Hamburg: virtilia 2007

Toutes Suites reconstructs Telemann's journal as he offered it on a monthly subscription basis in 1728-29.  The twenty-three “Lectionen (volumes) present a  delectable musical medley of ever changing genres and timbres, serving up a compendium of the  newest  ‘galante’ music of the day. Telemann cleverly teases the music lover’s appetite with a delicately ornamented tune here, a jolly dance there, mingling charming and delightful pieces  with expressive, enthralling musical moments apt deeply to move the listeners’ affections. Even acutely dramatic, startling scenes are included…This disk offers a beautiful collection of Baroque musical entertainment for the refined citizen at its best.
